Mother 3 Combos
A week later, I still cannot pull them off. It’s driving me insane.
I found this video and thought it would help, but it didn’t. I tried putting enemies to sleep to hear their heartbeat, but I still can’t get anything to happen. I see videos of people breezing through 16-hit combos, and all I have to show for my efforts are a handful of 3-hitters achieved by pure chance. I’m starting to think I’m hopeless.
Anybody else in the same predicament?

Totally with you on this one Nick.
I get the 3 hits by chance, but it’s usually 1 hit or 2(sometimes).
so i just decided to keep pressing the button quickly, I seem to be getting at least 2 hits more often

I’ve listened to the heart beats and what not and still can’t figure it out. Also it’s so strange how very little the game comments on the feature.

I can get a 16 hit combo on some of the earlier level monsters, haven’t got too far yet so not sure if it gets harder. Trick seems to be to tap out a classical music rythm, like 1,2,3,4 – quite simple pressesd. It doesn’t always match up with the song in my opinion though.

Emulators can induce a slight audio/visual lag, which can make the combos difficult. counting the meter 1, 2, 3, 4 in your head helps, but some of the songs have strange/indistinct meters (notably boss battles) which can through you off.

I had to get used to the combo system, but I have no problems with combos on my original Mother 3. Just practice enough (hint: the book with met enemies is a big help) and notice that the rhythm becomes harder through the game.
Also keep in mind that one hardware used to run ROM is better/worse than other in the terms of the game speed and reaction compared to the original. And the emulators fail greatly. There are few GBA games (eg. Mother 3 or Rhythm Tengoku) where every milisecond counts and these are easily affected by… The Curse of The Downloaded ROM!

I’m in the same boat as you, for all of the reasons listed above.
Good thing it isn’t a requirement to use combos to progress through the game. It might make life a little easier but you can certainly finish the game without it.

One time I pulled off a 9 combo. I was so happy.
And I’ve never pulled it off since.

I think the highest I’ve ever gotten was somewhere like five at once, the highest other than that however is just two.
I’m sure the emulator is tripping me up though.

What about if you’re using a flash cart to play the game on a GBA? Is that still considered emulation? Currently I’m playing on a Mac emulator but my flash cart will be in the post soon so I’ll be switching to that.

That’s what I’m doing, and I’m pretty sure that there’s no lag or any other difference from the real thing whatsoever.

Between this combo system and my guitar strum bar on Rock Band Wii I’m starting to highly doubt my ability to keep any rhythm.

It is good to know that other people are having the same problem. It makes me feel a little less incompetent.

Hey guys. Yeah the combos can pretty devious sometimes, for example where I am in the story now, I find it difficult to even get above a three hit combo, wherein earlier I could get a sixteen hitter at the drop of a hat. What was my tactic? Well, first, when the battle starts, start bobbing your handheld/hand/leg/whatever to the song. Humans naturally have an ability to match beat, usually that is, so just, do that and find the beat.
Once you have done that, get ready to attack. Press attack for your people. Now, when the message appears that “Flint attacked” or whoever, let that message sit for a second. Find the beat again, and then, start pressed along with it at that second.
If this doesn’t work, even after hours of trying, then yeah, it is most likely emulator lag. Emulator lag is most commonly found on computer emulators. Now, if you put it onto a PSP, or even better, emulate it onto a GBA/DS/Micro then you will be absolutely golden.
Hope that helps!

Thanks, dude! I’ll try your method and I hope it helps…we shall see.

You may not be far enough in the game… I didn’t find the early music very good for combos, but after the first two episodes I started doing 16 hit combos every now and then. Of course I might just be learning the beats…

Try alternating between [A button] and the [L trigger].
This is especially helpful when you fight bosses with complex music patterns. Your timing will be much better with two hands.

Thanks for that, Lucas!

for those who use cpu emulators I have found that if you go to options -> frame skip and set to 0(its normally set to 1-2) that it slightly helps me sync in with the beat. it will take awhile for your eyes to adjust because the motion of the sprites is ALOT sharper. But after awhile it might help you.
