I finally saw the movie in 3D tonight. During the first hour I hated it. During the second hour I begrudgingly started to like it. During the third hour I had to hold myself back from fist-pumping and cheering. (I gave in more than once.)
Only James Cameron could make something so generic and awful so sincere and great. That sentence doesn’t make a lot of sense, but I mean every word of it. An hour in, I had already decided it was horrible and that I’d wasted my money and time. And then it got me. Not like a classic, ‘real’ James Cameron flick from the 80s, but like…Titanic. That corniness that’s so sincere you can’t help but surrender. But this one was really on the edge. I’ve never cringed so much in a movie theater. And count me among the few who couldn’t stand the visuals.
But there’s no way I’m going to be able to resist the urge to go see it again. It got me good.

I haven’t seen it yet… there hasn’t been anything that really grabbed me.
Hearing this comment though I may consider seeing it now. I know that I will find the special effects a hinderence to my enjoyment of the movie mind you. Mainly because I’ve seen those visuals already and style and it hasn’t grabbed me at all.
Also from what I’ve heard and seen in previews, I’m assuming that the plot will be extremely predictable.
On the flip side if it has that sort of B-movie goodness that I love in movies like Star Wars, then I’ll be able to get into it.

That’s pretty much how I feel about it. It’s cheesy, predictable, and feel like it’s from the 90′s. But it plays you like a fiddle.

There have been so many comparisons with other movies; Pocahontas, Dances With Wolves, Aliens… but my favorite is the Smurfs. Blue magical creatures who live in harmony with nature are oppressed and attacked by human(s). Only difference is that in Avatar, smurfette is a guy not a girl.
Cheesy, predictable, ’80s, ’90s, B-movies… all of that aside, its in flippin’ 3-D!!! The last time I saw a 3-D movie was Harry Potter, and I was disappointed out of my mind! Kinda wanted to see Spy Kids 2 but was persuaded by my wife not to. But boy does Avatar kick-ass with the 3D! I was loving every minute of it, the jungle foliage, the depth perception of the base and spaceship, the Na’vi hands swirling up in Southern Baptistic fervor… loved it all!
AND, I lov~ed that half way through the movie I realized that I couldn’t visually tell what was CG or not! Move over Gollum now there’s something new!

Yeah, fun stuff. But I couldn’t buy the visuals! I thought the main character looked like he was walking on air a lot of the time…and the Navi designs never stopped being awkward to the point of hilarity. The CG have have technically been better than anything I’ve seen before, but the overall package visually wasn’t very convincing for me. I did love that huge dragon, though.

Toruk Makto!
I’m with you on the overall design of well, everything! It references a period of fantasy art that I can’t quite pinpoint. A bit from here, a bit from there… and while this is usually the case with all movies, it just didn’t seem to work out in Avatar.
All the Na’vi have the same nose as my cat!

Cooper’s nose! I actually dig the idea of the cat-like noses.
